“Before I started working with Higher Ground, I had never tried yoga and did not fully understand its benefits other than it tends to reduce stress. I worked out about 2-3 times a week (but if really busy at work did not work out at all) but ate whatever I wanted to eat.
Then, about a year ago, my doctor indicated that I had high blood pressure and cholesterol and that I was 35 pounds overweight. “I don’t know how I have lived without Kelly so far, but since our work together started earlier this year, she has become an essential part of my life. I have had back pain for over 12 years, resulting from a car accident; my doctors diagnosed me recently with two protruding discs. “I began working with Higher Ground Yoga with the goal of adding a different dimension to my training regime. As a professional basketball player in Europe who competes 9 to 10 months a year, I am constantly looking for ways to vary my off-season conditioning. I’ve taken classes at studios or followed workouts on DVDs off and on, but from my initial consultation with Kelly – when she asked profound questions that made me think about my goals, and helped her design a very effective program for me – I realized this was going to be a yoga experience that was different from any other I had.

“I started working with Kelly very shortly after I found out that I was pregnant (and right when the nausea and exhaustion set in!). I also suffer from knee injuries that had recently side-lined me from a very active running lifestyle. I was overcome with how I would deal with being pregnant while being unable to actively exercise until I met Kelly. Working with Kelly, her sense of calm – as well as her knowledge of yoga and pregnancy – are evident from the start. It has been an amazing experience working with her; not only has the yoga been amazing, but my conversations with her at the beginning of each session have really helped to put me at ease. When we first started working together, Kelly mentioned that these yoga sessions should be viewed as an ‘investment in yourself and your baby’ – and they really are! Kelly has had such a positive impact on my overall well-being that I truly cannot imagine going through the rest of my pregnancy without her! Since my daughter was born, I have struggled to come up with the right words to truly thank her for all that she did for me and all that she continues to do for me. There are too many words for it. Even though I gave birth in one of the busiest hospitals in the country, thanks to Kelly, I felt like our room and world were separate and apart from the chaos everywhere else. Even the nurses and doctor commented on how serene it was. I was concerned about medical interventions but wasn’t fully set on the idea of giving birth totally naturally — a bit of an oxymoron. Kelly helped me to recognize that it all would be ok (which became my mantra) and helped me to balance the medical side to having a baby with the true beauty and joy that every mother should be so lucky to feel. By teaching me how to breath, how to power through some tough contractions, and how to just relax into my experience, Kelly gave me such a confidence that I honestly enjoyed my labor! Further, the yoga practice we’d done throughout my pregnancy helped me to embrace all that was going on with my body and baby, and could not have prepared me any better for my labor. She helped make my daughter’s birth day the absolute best day of my and my husband’s life. ”
